Native Hawaiian Plants (6-8th)

As part of the DOE Hawaiʻi Native Plants in Schools Program, Grow Some Good has created curriculum designed for Grades 6-8 focused on native Hawaiian plants. The Native Hawaiian Plants Unit includes six lessons, each with a full lesson outline, optional video lesson, grade specific worksheets, hands-on activities, and additional resources for further learning. These lessons are aligned with NGSS Standards, Nā Hopena A‘o, ʻĀina Aloha, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. 

Each of the six lessons will build student knowledge related to native plants in Hawaiʻi. Lesson 1 introduces students to the many types of plants found in Hawaiʻi and explores how those plants arrived here. Lesson 2 takes a closer look at the role of native plants in the diverse ecosystems across the islands. Lesson 3 explores the connection to and importance of native plants in Hawaiian culture. Lesson 4 looks closely at specific endemic and indigenous plants to emphasize the information gathered in previous lessons. Lesson 5 brings to light the threats that native plants face and the conservation efforts to protect them. Lesson 6 rounds out the unit with a look at how students can help care for our native plants and ecosystems.
